What happened

Heflin saw a hat-shaped object, a disc with a dome, hovering over the road. With his work Polaroid he took three photos through the van window and a fourth of a dark smoke ring it left. His radio failed during the sighting. The Santa Ana Register published a photo on September 20, 1965. NICAP's Los Angeles subcommittee backed the photos. Ground Saucer Watch later reported a line above the object suggesting a string, and skeptics have proposed a thrown model or hubcap.
