"a bright, color-changing light (later retellings call it an "orb")"The witness's own shape words

What happened

A member pointed out a bright light in the western sky. Carter reported that it changed size, brightness and color over 10 to 12 minutes, at one point as bright as the moon. It seemed to approach, stop and then recede. He filed a report with the International UFO Bureau on September 18, 1973. Lions Club records show the Leary visit was January 6, 1969, and the Leary club had disbanded before October. Robert Sheaffer found Venus near maximum brightness in the direction Carter described. Carter, an amateur astronomer, rejected the Venus answer.
