What happened

After a thunderstorm the patrolmen saw a light near the water tower behind Lumberton High School move across the sky in an arc and vanish ("It just went out"). Over the next week more than thirty law enforcement officers reported a silent V-shaped craft with red and red-green lights and white spotlights. The reports came from a seven-county area, which The Robesonian gave as Robeson, Hoke, Sampson, Cumberland, Scotland, Bladen and Columbus. Jennie Zeidman's The Lumberton Report (CUFOS, 1976) considered helicopters, aircraft and astronomical objects but reached no conclusion.

Witnesses

Patrolmen Phil Stanton, P. H. Atkinson and Neil McCormick (Lumberton PD); dispatcher Sheriff Ronn Thompson; two St. Paul officers
