What happened

Ottawa County dispatch took a flood of calls about colored lights. Some callers described chrome-like cylinders, others circles. Velthouse relayed reports of five or six objects, some cylindrical, with blue, red, white and green lights. A dispatcher asked Bushong to check the weather radar. Putting it in manual mode, he tracked several echoes over the lake while Velthouse described movements on the ground, a moment caught on recorded calls. Holly Graves described a chrome cylinder in an interview later used by Unsolved Mysteries.

Witnesses

Holland police officer Jeff Velthouse; Holly Graves and family; meteorologist Jack Bushong, National Weather Service, Muskegon; hundreds of callers to Ottawa County 911

Explanation

Unresolved

None accepted. NWS managers later said the radar echoes were unrelated to the visual sightings; chaff or reflective material from military aircraft was suggested.
