What happened

Driving home, the crew saw a glowing disc hovering over a clearing. Skeptoid's summary describes a small silvery disc about 20 ft across. Walton ran toward it, was struck by a beam, and the crew fled. He reappeared five days later saying he had been aboard a craft. The crew passed early polygraphs, and Walton failed his first but passed later ones. Philip Klass called the case a hoax, noting the NBC film about the Hills had aired two weeks earlier and that Rogers was behind on a Forest Service contract.
