What happened

Crew members saw a Saturn-shaped object, an ellipse with a ring around it, pass over the island's peaks. Baraúna took four photos with a Rolleiflex. Brazilian newspapers ran them on February 21, 1958, and the Navy said it could not explain the object. U.S. naval intelligence and Blue Book called the photos trick photography. A woman later said Baraúna told her the photos were a joke, and he had earlier written about how to fake UFO photos.

Witnesses

Almiro Baraúna, civilian photographer, and crew of the Brazilian Navy ship Almirante Saldanha (one account gives at least 47 visual witnesses)
