What happened

Observers reported "two triangular, luminous appearances" on the moon's upper edge. Two dark triangular notches then appeared on the lower edge and "approached each other, met and instantly disappeared." This is the "1882 Scientific American triangles near the moon" case; the annotated Fort edition dates the observation to 1881.
