Over Tehran, Iran

What happened

After civilian calls, Pirouzi saw a bright object over the Shemiran district, which he described as rectangular with lights at each end. Gen. Youssefi saw it from his balcony and ordered an intercept. Nazeri's F-4 lost instruments and radio as it closed in and turned back. Jafari's F-4, launched about ten minutes later, got a radar lock. He said the object flashed red, green, orange and blue so brightly he could not see its body. A smaller object came out of it toward his jet. As he tried to fire a Sidewinder, his weapons panel and radio failed. Heading home, he said he saw the primary, diamond-shaped object release another bright object that came down gently to the ground. A search of the area the next day found nothing but a beeping emergency beacon. A report went to the Joint Chiefs, the CIA, the DIA and others. Jafari spoke about the case at the National Press Club in 2007.

Witnesses

Maj. Parviz Jafari, Imperial Iranian Air Force squadron commander, with weapons officer 1st Lt. Jalal Damirian; earlier, Lt. Yadollah Nazeri in a first F-4; air traffic controller Hossein Pirouzi; Gen. Youssefi

Explanation

Explanation proposed

Disputed. Philip Klass and James Oberg proposed Jupiter, with a faulty jet: only one F-4 lost power, and it had a long history of electrical faults. Brian Dunning notes the night fell at the peak of two meteor showers, and investigating officer Col. Mooy said the beacon came from a C-141, whose beacons were known to shake loose in turbulence.
