What happened

For more than half an hour Smith watched two fan-shaped or triangular "heavy shadows" on fast-moving clouds. The shadows stayed still and sometimes changed size. He concluded that two large unseen objects to the west were blocking the sun's rays, and he reported it to Nature. One online summary dates it to 1911, but Fort and Nature give 1912.
