What happened

Brazel found rubber strips, tinfoil and thick paper and wondered if it was one of the discs in the news. Haut's press release said the 509th Bomb Group had gained possession of a "flying disc." The Roswell Daily Record headline read "RAAF Captures Flying Saucer On Ranch in Roswell Region." The Army retracted the next day and called it a weather balloon. In 1994 the Air Force said the debris came from Project Mogul, a classified balloon array built to detect Soviet nuclear tests. A 1997 report attributed later "alien body" stories to test dummies and other conflated events. No witness described seeing a disc in flight. The "disc" was a label for debris.
