What happened

After a thunderstorm Rhodes heard a jet-like noise and took two photos of an object shaped "like the heel of a man's shoe" with twin vapor trails at its rear points. The Arizona Republic ran them on its July 9 front page. The FBI and Army Air Forces investigated, and the case became Project Grudge Incident 40. Investigators noted the shape matched Arnold's later description.
