What happened

A blue beam rose from the horizon and ended in a spinning white-gray spiral that grew, hung in the sky for two to three minutes, then turned into a black hole-like disc and faded. Online theories ranged from a wormhole to a HAARP beam from the nearby EISCAT facility.

Witnesses

Thousands across northern Norway and Sweden (hundreds called the Norwegian Meteorological Institute)

Explanation

Explained

Failed Russian Bulava missile test from a submarine in the White Sea, confirmed by the Russian Ministry of Defence the next day. Tromsø Geophysical Observatory's Truls Lynne Hansen said sunlight on leaking fuel from a spinning missile produced the spiral.
