What happened

A bright star-like light grew over the city into what the Soviet press called a shining jellyfish, sending rays of light down for several minutes before shrinking into a crescent and moving off over Lake Onega. Nordic governments wrote to the Soviet Academy of Sciences asking whether it was a weapons test, and the event helped start the Soviet Setka research program on anomalous atmospheric phenomena.

Witnesses

Residents of Petrozavodsk and towns across Karelia and Finland (85 reports collected by Soviet researchers by end of 1978)

Explanation

Explained
