What happened
Working by the lake, the two heard a buzzing and saw a gray, rocket-shaped object with wings come down into the water. The Swedish military searched the lake bottom for about three weeks and found nothing. It is the best known of the 1946 "ghost rocket" crashes. About 2,000 ghost rocket sightings were logged between May and December 1946, peaking on August 9 and 11. Fearing Soviet tests of captured V-2 technology, the U.S. sent Gen. Jimmy Doolittle and David Sarnoff to Sweden. Investigators concluded that many sightings were probably meteors, and debris sent in was later said to be meteorite fragments.
