What happened
A brilliant fireball crossed Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and neighboring states. Some witnesses near Kecksburg reported something falling into the woods. Bulebush said he found a smoldering, sparking object about 10 ft long, shaped like an acorn, with markings he compared to hieroglyphics around its base. Romansky described a bronze acorn about the size of a Volkswagen Beetle. Residents said state police and soldiers closed the area, and Hays said he saw a flatbed truck leave carrying something the size of a VW. Officials said nothing was found. Murphy said he took photos and gathered material; his planned radio report did not air as recorded. In 2003 journalist Leslie Kean, backed by the Sci-Fi Channel, sued NASA under FOIA. In 2007 a court ordered a search, and a NASA official testified that two boxes of records from the period were missing. Much of the detail comes from interviews decades later, starting with Unsolved Mysteries in 1990 and Stan Gordon's research.
