What happened

Adamski said a large cigar-shaped "mothership" appeared overhead and released a smaller scout craft. He walked off alone and described meeting a man from Venus. His companions said they saw a distant figure. Adamski had already claimed a cigar-shaped mothership over Palomar Gardens in 1946 and later sold telescope photos of cigar-shaped "Venusian carriers." Most UFO researchers of his day regarded him as a con artist and his claims as an elaborate hoax.

Witnesses

George Adamski, contactee; George Hunt Williamson, Al Bailey and their wives, Alice Wells and Lucy McGinnis

Explanation

Hoax

Basis: identified photo parts and an associate's account. Adamski's 1952 saucer photo was shown to use light bulbs and a gas-lantern shade, and Jerrold Baker said he heard the desert meeting planned on tape days before it happened.
