F-16 scramble

March 30-31, 1990, from about 11:00 p.m.
Thorembais-Gembloux area, southeast of Brussels, Belgium

What happened

Ground reports of three lights came first. A second set of lights was then seen moving toward "the first triangle." On the strength of radar contacts, two F-16s were scrambled from Beauvechain. They attempted nine interceptions and got three brief radar locks, but neither pilot saw anything. Captain Pinson described four lights in a square. Dunning argues the locks were the F-16s locking onto each other, and the other returns were Bragg scattering (false radar echoes caused by atmospheric conditions).
